SUMMARY:Firekeepers Virtual Village At-Home Adventures and Weekly Story Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Need some extra inspiration to get outside wandering\, exploring\, playing? Looking for a little extra connection with a beautiful nature-loving community? \nAs we dive back into lockdown here in Naarm\, or so called Melbourne\, we are feeling the call to tend to the fire of community and connection. It feels like a time to turn towards each other\, to be present to each other\, to help each other find the little spark of wonder that moves us to notice and connect with the world around us. \nAs a community\, we have co-created some incredible magic at our Wild by Nature Village Camps over the past few years. Kids and adults alike come along to share in curiosity and adventure\, to make discoveries and learn skills\, to share stories and songs and celebrate ourselves\, each other and\, of course\, the incredible beings of the land we gather on. \nWhen Covid-19 restrictions hit earlier in the year and we couldn’t gather\, we had to adapt and we shared a beautiful and connective virtual village experience – not the same of course\, but incredible all the same. Now\, as we sit in the ongoing uncertainty of the moment\, we want to rekindle that magic and come together each week to fan the flames of connection between us and between us the wonderful world around us. \nSo\, here is the plan\, a two-part weekly offering plus a couple of monthly gatherings! \nWeekly Wander \nA Nature Adventure sent to you each Friday – something to get you out in nature\, wherever is available to you locally. Something to spark your curiosity\, to build awareness of the world around you\, to practise skills or crafts\, to move and play in your wild body. There will be something to discover for kids of all ages (including adult kids!) You do the activity in your own time during the week\, in whatever way works for you. And if you don’t get to it\, you don’t get to it. No pressure\, just an invitation to engage in some way with the magic of nature. \nWeekly Waggle* \nA Weekly Virtual Village gathering on Thursdays from 4-5pm on zoom to see each other’s faces and connect; to gather up our stories and adventures from the week into a big community bundle; to sing and maybe dance; to listen to stories of magic and wonder; and to hopefully to leave with our individual fires burning a little stronger. \nPlus Wednesday evening monthly spaces (open to the wider community): \nWednesday Warble Song Circle \nSinging together online can be surprisingly connective and lots of fun! Let’s gather to sing some of our camp favourites and also some new songs – bring a song or two to share if you feel to! For adults and kids. \nVillage Hearth Adults’ Sharing Circle \nA space for adults of the village to share from the heart to the heart\, to bring yourself as you are and be with what is\, to speak and be heard\, to listen with curiosity and compassion. A space where courage and vulnerability are welcome and celebrated. A space to deepen connection and understanding of one another. \nWe will have a little corner of facebook\, for those who are on facebook\, to share photos and stories from our adventures\, as well as the Thursday gathering space. \nWe’re keeping it simple and as accessible as possible. The invitation is that you engage in a way that works for you. All – kids\, families\, adults\, elders – are welcome\, as well as\, of course\, the winged ones and rooted ones and four-legged ones and scaly ones and creepy crawly ones and fungi ones and mossy ones and all the beings we meet along the way! \nDates \nWe will run our program for 5 weeks. \nWeekly Village Gathering: Thursdays 4-5pm from  6th August to 3rd September. \nWeekly Adventure Invitations: sent out Fridays starting 31 July \nWednesday Song Circle – Wednesday 5 August 7-8.30pm FREE session (Monthly 1st Wed/month) \nVillage Adults’ Sharing Circle – Wednesday 19 August 8-9.30pm FREE session (Monthly 3rd Wed/month) \n  \nPricing and registration \nSliding scale $50-$150 per household for the 5 week block. \nWe are offering sliding scale payments in recognition that not everyone has the same means. We ask that you consider your means and your willingness to pay for this offering. The higher price points support us to be able to offer the lower prices\, to pay our facilitators and to support Firekeepers ongoing. No questions will be asked and no judgments made about how much each participant chooses to pay. We also have some tickets available on a NOTAFLOF basis (No one turned away for lack of funds) \nA sliding scale payment system is based on trust – thanks for bravely engaging in this experiment with us!

SUMMARY:The Art of Storytelling: Practice and Play!
DESCRIPTION:Have you noticed how a good story totally lights up a space? I have come to realise that storytelling at its best is very alive to the moment. Stepping into a story is like stepping into a great adventure. The storyteller\, like the adventurer\, has stepped out of known territory onto rocky\, uneven ground\, where each step is a conversation with the world. The teller\, like the adventurer\, must be alive to all that lives in the space. \nI have also noticed\, for myself at least\, that having a space to tell a story or to express my creativity\, can make me more alive to the world as I navigate life – on wanders\, sit spots\, in conversations with human and more-than-human beings\, at work\, while cooking dinner\, wherever it may be… Having a space into which my creativity can flow often seems to make me more alive to inspiration in the world around me. \nAnd I think we get better at things through practice and play. I want to practise telling stories with whatever ingredients are showing up in my life at any moment. I want to practise stepping off that ledge into the unknown territory of a living story. I want to practise stepping into the fear of the unknown\, into the place where I must meet each moment with presence and aliveness. I want to play with story and creativity and see what flows. Sometimes it might be terrible! I might get lost in my mind\, unable to find the flow. Other times\, the magic of a truly alive story might flow forth and light everyone up! \nWould you like to join me in exploring the art of storytelling in a space devoted to practice and play? No expectations\, no judgments\, a safe small-group space to play and explore the place where the imagination meets the world. \nWhen? \nFridays 2-4pm starting 7 August. \nWe will gather weekly for 4 weeks and see what emerges between us! \nCost: \nSliding scale from $40 to $120 for 4 sessions. \nIf you’re keen to join\, and this cost is prohibitive for you\, please be in touch with Steph at steph@firekeepers.com.au. \nStructure:\nWe’ll start with a short check in\, followed by some sort of story/imagination warm up\, then there will be space for 2 or 3 people each week to tell a story. You can bring a pre-prepared story or just some ingredients or sparks of inspiration. Or you could come totally empty-handed and see what emerges on the spot! I have a belief that we may realise that there will always be little sparks in there waiting for a place to show up\, no matter how unprepared or empty-handed we feel – I guess we’ll find out! The only guideline is that you don’t read your story from a page – you tell it and let it live… or fall flat. We will aim to finish with a brief check out to wrap up the journey we’ve been on together that day. \nWho? \nThis is for you if you believe stories are magic and want to share your love of stories with like minded group; if you want to explore story and storytelling in space that is supportive\, encouraging and playful; if you want to listen to stories from other explorers in the terrain of the imagination and feel able to be a non-judgmental\, supportive audience; if you feel able to commit to coming along regularly so we can build a safe space over time; if you feel ready to step into discomfort and trust in process over outcome. \nI mostly see this as a space for adults\, but kids who are keen and able to engage in a way that is supportive\, attentive and open to vulnerability are welcome. It’s an experiment\, so we can see how it unfolds. \nAbout me: \nI am Steph\, a nature connection mentor who has been working with Firekeepers while delving deeper into my own relationship with nature over the past several years. I remember being captured by the magic of story around a campfire about 5 years ago\, totally drawn in as the teller wove their tale. Since then\, I have been on my own exploration with story\, tiptoeing around the edges at first\, but going deeper with time and occasionally diving right into the depths! I am not an expert\, not a “master storyteller\,” but a lover of stories\, a lover of the spell that is cast by a magical tale and a consistent apprentice to the art of storytelling. I am curious about how storytelling interweaves with our connection to nature\, as well as to self and community. I believe we’re all born storytellers\, and I’m excited to continue to explore how we can uncover and open to that part of ourselves.

SUMMARY:Queer Wilderness Retreat: The nature of queerness and belonging
DESCRIPTION:Nature reminds us that being Queer* is both natural and something to be celebrated! Showing up as who we are in our own unique queer form is a celebration of nature’s diversity and honors our profound connection to the natural world and a deep sense of belonging. \nAccepting the fullness of our queer selves is both a radical act of rebellion against forces of hate and division\, and a radical act of communion with all living things. Now is the time to reclaim our roots and celebrate the gifts that our queerness brings to the world! \nCome join us as we move through the seasons of our queerness opening to and honoring our full nature. This ceremonial time is designed specifically for the LGBTQIA+ community. This journey will have guided\, intentional time on the land each day along with time gathering together in council to tell and witness our diverse and unique queer stories. \nAs one participant has put it: \n“In sacred circles before\, I have found an ally or two\, another queer person who understands in some fundamental way some part of my story. But to sit in sacred space with an entire group that shares that common thread\, that common understanding of shame and fear and celebration\, that is a gift that I had no idea until I stepped into that space that my soul was craving.” -Alicia B. \nThe retreat will be guided by Ruth Wharton and Pedro McMillan\, experienced Vision Fast and Queer Quest guides with the School of Lost Borders. All guides and assistants on this program identify as queer. \nLOCATION AND DATES: We will meet in the afternoon/evening of April 25th\, 2020 at Trentham East\, a 1 hour drive north of Melbourne. The program will end early afternoon on May 1st. \nENROLLING AND COST:\nTuition/Guide Fee: $975 AUD ($800 Concession) with limited scholarships available. A non refundable deposit of $350 is required and will hold your place.\nCamping Fee: $60\nFood not included.\nPlease email Pedro at pedro@pedrosplanet.com to enroll or enquire about scholarships. You can pay or put down a deposit through here:\nhttps://events.humanitix.com.au/queer-wilderness-retreat-the-nature-of-queerness-and-belonging \nLOGISTICS: Plan to bring a tent\, sleeping mat and sleeping bag to ‘car camp’ and food for the entire program. We will often share meals so bringing things that can be shared is a good idea. You can also eat alone if you wish. There is a outdoor camp kitchen for your use. \nGUIDES\nRuth Wharton:\nDeeply rooted in earth\, body\, ceremony and a long lineage of guides from the School of Lost Borders\, Ruth offers an abundance of love and fierce insight to those Ruth guides and mentors. Beginning to guide wilderness rites of passage at the age of 21\, Ruth’s experience spans over 2 decades\, supporting over 1000 people of all ages through initiation practices. As a licensed professional counselor\, wilderness therapist and guide\, play therapist\, and wilderness first responder\, Ruth has worked in a variety of settings supporting diverse people in meaningful life passages. As a guide working with the School of Lost Borders for over 20 years\, Ruth is also one of the founders of both the Women’s Fast and Queer Quest. Being gender expansive and having a strong focus on social justice\, Ruth is continually on the path of creating inclusive and accessible space for all people. Ruth continues to guide\, offer trainings and mentorship in the Wild Mountains of Colorado and around the world. Traveling to support communities cross culturally\, Ruth is continually learning from diverse landscapes and people inspired by our differences\, earth based common threads\, and shared humanity. \nPedro McMillan:\nAs an elder with long experience with rites of passage\, Pedro brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding to teaching and holding space for those called to the land. Pedro has been a guide working with the School of Lost Borders since 2010 after nearly 15 years of participating\, training and assisting programs with the School. Pedro’s experience as a long time business owner and eco-entrepreneur gives him a clear view of the many challenges we face as modern humans and brings a strong and compassionate heart to rites of passage work. As a co-founder of the Queer Quest program at the School of Lost Borders\, Pedro also brings an understanding of the need to create inclusive and safe spaces for marginalized groups and is committed to the work of social justice. \nASSISTANTS:\nLocal nature connection mentors and guides Mel Turnbull and Emily Steele have both undertaken training with Ruth and Pedro through the School of Lost Borders and will assist with this program. \nThis event will be held on Dja Dja Wurrung land. We pay respects to the Dja Dja Wurrung people\, and their elders past\, present and emerging. We acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded. \nWe also acknowledge our past present and emerging queer* ancestors and leaders of all cultural diversities\, on whose shoulders we now stand. \n*We recognize and honor that the word “queer” has been used in the past as a derogatory term and may still be hurtful for some in the LGBTQIA+ community. Many of us have reclaimed the word “queer” and this has been both empowering and uniting of the multiple identities within the community. We use the word here as an inclusive term and shortcut for the LGBTQIA+ lettering.

SUMMARY:Firekeepers Spring Virtual Village
DESCRIPTION:Tracker and Naturalist Jon Young says that keeping nature stories to yourself and not sharing them with friends\, family or your community is like never developing the film from your camera. (Back when we regularly used cameras…and film). In the story telling and catching and deeper questioning\, we get to develop and deepen our connection and curiosity. \nDuring this lock down\, we have been crafting weekly programs of nature connection activities to inspire you to get out into nature and then a space to catch your nature stories and deepen your curiosity and learning. \nFor many of us\, especially those in Melbourne- Naarm\, nature in whatever way we can connect with it\, has become a balm and important support during the Covid 19 restrictions. Even when we can’t be physically close to our human friends\, there are always birds to watch near by\, flowers offering their springy fragrances and a tree open for a hug! As well as fostering a deeper connection with nature\, our mission is to build connection to self and community. We offer these gatherings to hold space for all of us at this time- to continue old and grow new community connections and build all of our resilience at this time where isolation and loneliness are rife. \nIn this series we will be delving into: \n-Tracking with Claire Mosley and Mel Turnbull \n-Birds & Life cycles with Claire Dunn & Katrina Roberg \n-Nature Mandalas with Claire Mosley and Skye Mandozay \n-Shelter Building with Steph Brophy and Ollie Fabinyi \n-Steph Brophy will be our Storyteller in residence this program – weaving engaging and interactive stories and supporting other storytellers through the weeks. \nAll ages and faces (new and old) are welcome! We have babies to elders join\, though it is geared towards kid’s engagement. 🙂 Nature celebrates diversity\, and so do we. You do not have to have been on one of our programs before to join in. \nThis is our second round of Firekeepers Virtual Village\, we are grateful for and have incorporated feedback from our Winter Villagers and from our Virtual Village Camp held back in Autumn. \nRead what have previous villagers said about the program? \n“Virtual Village was a joy to connect with others who share our family passion of nature connection. Having other people talk so passionately about their nature connection experiences strengthens what i as a mother am bringing to my children. Being involved in Firekeepers programs creates a culture of excitement to be in connection with nature and community\, that i can’t bring to my children alone. It normalises and celebrates our deep joy of seeing a particular bird\, finding an edible weed\, a track or a scat.” Parent \nThe Virtual Village was a delightful way to connect with friends new and old\, and discover ways to spend time exploring nature. Meeting birds\, finding plants\, nature journaling\, the magic of fire and the senses were covered in this incredible five week program. We looked forward to the weekly meeting and our hearts are filled with gratitude and love. I would highly recommend this program to families with young children needing an antidote to all the screen time that creeps into our lives.Thank you Firekeepers!” Indrani Perera\, poet and publisher of the Pocketry Almanack \nDetails:\nWeekly Email Invitations \nAn email is sent out when you register and then each Thursday. Inside are a couple of different invitations\, via video and text- These are each designed to spark the varied interests of our village members – young and old. You don’t have to do all of it\, just what sparks interest for you. You have the week to participate in whatever way you want with the activity instruction (including … not- no judgement!) \nWeekly Village Gathering  \nWe will gather on Zoom each Thursday during the series from 4-5pm to see each other’s faces and connect. This will be a facilitated hour\, It will look like:\nWelcoming new folks\, (before others arrive)\,\nWelcome\, Acknowledgement & Gratitude\,\nSinging together / Group game\,\nBreak out rooms to share stories of the week\,\nGroup report backs\,\nAnnouncements\,\nStory from our Storyteller\nPreview of next week’s activity\nClosing song\nand an option to hang out afterwards in a breakout room if you wish.; \n* All activities are invitations and optional and though we would love to see your face\, you can choose to keep your camera off if you would feel more comfortable that way. \nFacebook Group \nWe have a group\, for those who use Facebook\, to share photos and stories from our adventures\, as well as the Thursday gathering space. This was a great way to stay connected with the weekly activity last time. \nWe will also continue to be holding our Free Monthly Community evening spaces on Wednesdays via Zoom: \nWednesday Warble Song Circle\n1st Wednesday/Month- 7-8:30pm \nSinging together online can be surprisingly connective and lots of fun! Let’s gather to sing some of our camp favourites and also some new songs – bring a song or two to share if you feel to! For adults and kids. \nVillage Heart Adults’ Sharing Circle – Register separately here\n3rd Wednesday/Month 8-9:30pm \nA space for adults of the village to share from the heart\, to bring yourself as you are and be with what is\, to speak and be heard\, to listen with curiosity and compassion. SUMMARY:Spring Holiday Program- Online & Outside
DESCRIPTION:Finding it hard to peel the kids off the screens? Need a boost of inspiration and new ideas to get out into nature after our long winter? Want your kids to connect with other nature kids and mentors these holidays? \nWe are inspiring kids and families to get out and adventuring in nature these Spring school holidays during Covid 19 restrictions. \nThe sessions are designed for kids 5-12 (but they are universal passions\, so siblings and family members of all ages will likely enjoy being involved during the day).  Ideas and suggestions in the morning will help the kids find their own sense of agency to create this adventure for themselves\, hopefully with less help needed from parents. \nOur online and outside program will include: \nA 30 minute Morning session on zoom with a small group of kids (max 10) and 2 experienced nature connection mentors. Here kids will meet each other\, play games\, learn new skills and receive their nature play mission for the day. \n9 – 9.30 or 10-10.30* \nAND \nA 30-45 minute Afternoon session on zoom with the same small group and mentors\, where we each child will have a chance to share their story of the day\, have it caught and deepened by nature connection mentors. They will see each other’s magnificent creations and seed new explorations for the rest of the week. \n2-2.45 or 3.15 – 4pm* \n*Depending on popularity\, we may run 2 small groups each day. If we do we will break the kids into older and younger age groups. We will confirm your session time (9am +2pm or 10am + 3:15pm)\, the day prior to the event. \nWeek 1: Exploration and Mapping \nTuesday 22nd Sept\nGroup 1: 9am +2pm\nGroup 2: 10am + 3:15pm\nMentors: Claire M & Katrina\n\nJoin us for a day of exploration\, mapping\, and creativity! A day to deepen our relationship with our local areas and to explore what is special for us. \nWe will be tuning into our nature super powers\, to find out what unique places\, creatures\, and other magical secrets inhabit our local areas. \nIf you can’t access a local park within your 5km\, then this Mapping Day/ day of exploration can be experienced from your window\, your backyard\, your street. All options will be full of opportunities for creation! \nYou will need : basic art materials including paper and things to write and draw with. \nWeek 2: Cubby and Shelter building\nMonday 28 Sept\nGroup 1: 9am +2pm\nGroup 2: 10am + 3:15pm\nMentors: Mel & Claire M \nBuilding shelters connect kids with a sense of identity and place. But shelter building also involves connecting with the landscape\, with concepts of history and science.. and it’s loads of fun!!\nCan you make a shelter that would keep you dry from what you can find around you? How about a model one? How can you make a cosy home for yourself or for imaginative play/ Or a survival shelter? Or somewhere to camp out for the night? Will it pass the storm test? \nThis Shelter Building Day can be experienced at a local park\, in your back yard or even in your living room (perhaps not the storm test!). All options will be full of opportunities for creativity\, play and engineering! \nYou will need : we will help kids identify the potential equipment and materials they have at home or in their backyard or local park\, being mindful of environmental impact. They may also want the use of a phone or camera for taking photos of their creations.
